Woven: The Art of Contemporary Native Basketry Workshops

Workshops related to WOVEN: The Art of Contemporary Native Basketry will be taught by four of the artists featured in the exhibition: Bernice Akamine (Native Hawaiian), Kelly Church (Odawa/Ojibwe), Lisa Telford (Haida), and Dawn Nichols Walden (Ojibwe).

Workshops will takes place after the artists talks in the Foster building classrooms on the Clark College Campus-1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver, WA 98663: Sunday April 3, 2016, 1-5pm-Space will be limited.

Bernice Akamine:
Bernice will be teaching two sessions: 1-3:00pm & 3-5:00pm
She will be teaching the ancient art of Ohe Kapala, traditional bamboo stamps with very intricate designs. These were used in ancient times to create repetitive patterns onto kapa. Using one stamp the artist could create hundreds of different designs. These designs played on both positive and negative space, creating patterns with even the unstamped portion of the design. This workshop will include printmaking with natural dyes. Limited to 15 people per session. There will be a $15.00 materials fee per person

Kelly Church:
Kelly will be teaching two sessions: 1-3:00pm & 3-5:00pm
This workshop will instruct participants on the art of weaving with Black ash splints. The finished piece will be a durable Black Ash Basket (5"H x 4" Diameter). This workshop will begin with a 3-minute video showing how a tree is harvested for baskets. Each participant will weave a Traditional Style Round Bottom basket. They will begin by weaving together a bottom that they will build up. They will finish by weaving a “loop” rim, and embellish. Kelly will provide prepared Black ash strips, scissors, and bowls for water. Each participant will go home with a finished basket. Limited to 20 people max. per session. There will be a $55.00 materials fee per person

Lisa Telford:
Lisa will be teaching one session: 1-5:00pm
This workshop will instruct participants in the art of making a twined basket necklace. Each participant will learn how to weave a plated bottom, make a square into a circle, and two and three strand twining. Limited to 12 people. There will be a $50.00 materials fee per person


Dawn Nichols Walden:
Dawn will be conducting two free demonstrations: 1-3:00pm & 3-5:00pm
These demonstrations will show participants how to make a traditional folded birch bark container (4 1/2" wide x 3" deep x 4" diameter). The materials consist of birch bark, willow, and porcupine quills. Limited to 15 people.
